Beating Type 1 Diabetes: Diabetes + Stronger

by Tony Bianchino, owner Out Run Your Fork Personal Training and Nutrition in Westfield, NJ

As a personal trainer and nutritionist near me in Westfield, NJ, we create better health for people of all ages.

๐——๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ฒ๐˜€ + [๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—ฟ] Don’t just “Cover It With Insulin.”

When we took my daughter home from the hospital the doctors and nurses all said

“She can eat anything she wants. Just make sure to ‘cover it with insulin.'”

“Covering it with Insulin” simply means taking the right amount of insulin based on the amount of carbohydrates you eat.

“She can eat everything everyone else can eat,” they said. “Ice cream, cake, cookiesโ€ฆ just like any other kid.”

“How much of that can she eat?” We asked

“As much as she wants!” the nurse delighted.

Huh? ๐Ÿ˜ณ That sounds CRAZY!!!!!

How can a health practitioner tell me that she can eat as much junk food as she wants?

Aren’t they supposed to seek out health and wellness for their patients?

As a personal trainer and nutritionist, this made no sense to me.

Thinking about cutting carbs altogether? Check out this article first.

“Just like any other kid”

“So, you mean she can go to a party and eat cookies, cakes and ice cream? That she can eat bread and regular yogurt and all that stuff?” I queried.

“Yep!” she enthused.

I was stunned. Absolutely at a loss for words (I know, hard to believe, but I was).

“But, how is that healthy?” I asked.

“She shouldn’t have to feel deprived just because she’s a diabetic now.” The nurse explained. ” She should be able to live life just like any other kid.”

I really didn’t know what to say.

I looked at my wife and moved my mouth as if to speak and couldn’t think of One. Single Thing. To. Say.

Her words rattled around in my head, “… just like any other kid.”

So, other kids who eat unhealthy are the role model for a diabetic? Eating cake, cookies and ice cream defines what it is to be a kid?

I can’t accept it.

And it infuriates me!

Sorry, not sorry

While it’s true, as a diabetic you could eat anything you want and just cover it with insulin, but, โ€ฆ should you?

I don’t think so.

Think about it.

If sugar is bad for everyone, then why would you tell someone who is now immunocompromised and at a higher risk of so many other life-threatening conditions like heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure โ€ฆ why would you encourage them to eat like other kids who might not be eating healthy themselves?

How did eating sugar and crappy food become the de facto role model to emulate?

Here’s Three Things You Can About It

Choose high Protein, low carb snacks

High Protein, Low Carb snacks help decrease insulin resistance and decrease the amount of insulin needed to at any one given time.

Protein aids muscle recovery and helps in building strength.

Add Resistance Training

Resistance training (calisthenics, weight training, suspension training) differs from cardio (running, walking, biking, HIIT workouts). Resistance training forces the body to re-learn or optimize the way it uses and stores carbohydrates.

After a good weight training session (30 minutes of moderate intensity weight training is recommended) our bodies store more carbohydrates in healthy places like our liver and our muscles. In this scenario less carbohydrates will be stored as fat.

Want to prevent an increase in body fat and help burn some off? Make resistance training the foundation of your exercise routine.

Choose Foods That Are High In Fiber

Foods that are high in fiber helps maintain regular bowel movements PLUS it helps keep you hydrated.

Upon entering your intensives, fiber absorbs water and slows digestion. By keeping water in your digestive system longer, water has a chance to slowly enter your body over time causing a more steady state of hydration, too.
